The Missing Girl by Shirley Jackson

Her best-known novel, The Haunting of Hill House, is the quintessential haunted-house story. It often seemed that her husband, the literary critic Stanley Edgar Hyman, was more respected than Jackson during her lifetime. I can only hope that the other books of the Penguin Modern series doesn’t disappoint me.Indeed, Jackson was expected to undertake the role of a 1950s housewife even when she was at her peak – ferrying her four children to and from school and doing the laundry, before finding a few moments here and there to bash away at her Royal. I had high hopes from the book since it was all about spookiness but well, nothing extreme really happened. I couldn’t relate to the stories and the characters. This was kind of spooky but again, had an abrupt ending.Įither the book lacked well structured plot lines or it just wasn’t for me. She tries to get away from the truck but it follows her everywhere. She was walking around New York, trying to deliver a package for her boss, when a truck passes by her announcing “Find Miss X and win a prize!” The announcer was giving some hints about Miss X and Miss Morgan soon realises Miss X was actually her and the people on the streets were supposed to find her. It was about a lady named Miss Morgan, and a strange ‘Find Miss X’ contest. The third story is titled ‘Nightmare’ and the title itself lifted my hopes high. Although, I was expecting the lady might do something to the boy but nothing that sort happened, which again makes me question – How is this story creepy or chilling?

A little boy, while travelling on a train meets this mysterious lady who was on the run from the police. The second story ‘Journey With A Lady’ was the only story which made sense to me. It just ended abruptly and left me baffled. I still don’t know what actually happened in the end. Several forces jumped in to find the missing girl whose existence seemed to be pretty doubtful. The first short story ‘The Missing Girl’ is about a young teenage girl who went missing from her summer camp. The book promises to be a creepy, chilling read but, I found nothing creepy in there. The book consists of three short dank tales – The Missing Girl, Journey With A Lady and Nightmare set beneath ordinary American lives.
